The best weekend on Jekyll Island – EVER

Join the Georgia Conservancy for a weekend of camping, paddling, beach walks, fishing, hiking bike riding and environmental education that includes a “Gatorology 101” presentation and a special tour of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Dinners, breakfasts and one lunch are included in the price of this trip.

Jekyll Island, once known as the “playground of millionaires,” is now home to Jekyll Island Club Historic District, Jekyll Island State Park, and other Jekyll Island Authority properties, including the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and Jekyll Island Museum.

Camping:

This is a primitive camping only trip, however, guests are welcome to provide their own accommodations for the weekend and join us on ALL activities if they pay the “Day Pass” rate. Courtesy of the Jekyll Island Authority, we will be camping in the meadow of the historic dairy on the west side of Jekyll Island. Camping facilities include running water and rented porta-toilets. Shower facilities will be available at the Jekyll Island RV Campground a few miles away.

Paddling:

Hosted by SouthEast Adventure Outfitters, our Saturday morning paddle will launch from the southwest side of Jekyll Island and track north through the beautiful salt marsh through Fancy Bluff Creek. After rounding the northern tip of the island we will beach our boats at the driftwood beach. Watercraft are not provided but SouthEast Adventures has both kayaks and tandem kayaks for available to rent – click this link for reservations (make sure to reserve your kayak as soon as you register for this experience!)

Gatorology 101:

After a day of paddling and exploring on Jekyll, we will be treated to “Gatorology 101” hosted by Dr. Kimberly Andrews. The program will include Alligator 101 information, including basic biology, conservation challenges, the alligator experience, and dispelling myths about alligator behaviors. Guests will learn about some of the exciting alligator research taking place on Jekyll and how Jekyll Island helps create a safe co-existence between alligators and people. Participants will get the awesome opportunity to meet Tiny, Jekyll’s captive resident alligator.

Georgia Sea Turtle Center:

On Sunday morning our group will enjoy breakfast and then pay a visit to the Georgia Sea Turtle Science Center for a special facility tour. Our group will have the opportunity to explore the exhibit gallery (sea turtle museum) and venture into the GSTC hospital to experience “Meet the Patients”, an auditory introduction to the sea turtles in the hospital. An educator will be present to the group and answer questions for the duration of your visit.
