Natural Dyeing
+ + Students will learn the basics of dyeing with plant-based dyes, including indigo and a range of other sources to create blue, shades of orange, yellows, browns and grays
+ Students will learn how mordants, like iron and alum, can shift colors to create a range of hues.
+ Students will be presented with samples of other naturally-dyed fabric to get a sense of the range of color that is possible from plant-based sources.
+ Students will dye two yards of cotton for their hand-pieced wall-hanging, as well as thread for quilting.
DAY TWO | 11 – 5 (with a half hour for lunch, not provided)
Hand Stitching
+ Students will learn the basic stitches required for slow, meditative hand-stitching and learn which thread and needles work best for different types of projects
+ Students will learn to create improvisational Log Cabin and Courthouse Step quilt blocks by hand
+ Students will create four blocks and use those quilt blocks to create a wall hanging measuring approximately 24 x 24 inch
+ Students will learn the basics of hand-quilting, and leave with the skills to finish their wall-hanging at home if unable to finish during class
Students should bring the following:
+ heavy duty rubber gloves, similar to what you would use for washing dishes
+ a yard of white 100% cotton fabric. This does not have to be expensive, and can be muslin or broadcloth, it just has to be 100% cotton. This will be used for the backing of their wall-hanging.
