“Have you ever been somewhere so breathtaking that you hardly dare snap a picture for fear of missing something? Welcome to Ossabaw Island.” – Emily Peterson, 2012 Ossabaw Island Volunteer

Join the Georgia Conservancy and the Ossabaw Island Foundation for a weekend service trip to Ossabaw Island on September 16-18. This trip is an incredibly rare opportunity to enjoy a primitive and remote barrier island, and to support its preservation by giving back with some elbow grease. Guests will do everything – landscaping, scrubbing and cleaning the historic structures, maintaining trails, and restoring a campsite. Because of their hard work, guests can enjoy below market rates for a weekend that includes ferry transportation, lodging and meals.

From the Ossabaw Island Foundation:

“Ossabaw Island, on the Georgia coast, contains 26,000 acres of maritime forest, tidal wetlands and wide beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. It is an unspoiled place set aside by the State of Georgia as a heritage preserve for natural, scientific and cultural study, and research and education. It’s only 20 minutes by boat from Savannah, yet it’s worlds apart. Ossabaw Island is where loggerhead sea turtles and endangered wood storks nest; where students learn research techniques and the value of an unspoiled place; where historic cultures are studied; and where photographers, writers, painters and musicians find inspiration.”

Weekend Trip Prices: We have three types of overnight accommodations for the Ossabaw Island Service Weekend, camping, clubhouse and bunkhouse lodging. All prices are based on your lodging arrangements. Price includes all meals, ferry transportation to and from the island, and activites on the island.

Camping – Camping is provided in the fields and orchard surrounding the Clubhouse. Campers will have access to bathrooms and showers. $175 single, $350 double/couple, $450 family

The Clubhouse – Our headquarters for the weekend, the Clubhouse will be the location for our prepared meals, housing for a majority of our weekend guests and a gathering place in the evenings for meetings and socializing. Relaxing on the Clubhouse wraparound porch, complete with rocking chairs and ceiling fans, is one of the best activities on Ossabaw. Guests lodging in the Clubhouse will stay in either the men’s or women’s bunk rooms. The Clubhouse does offer two private rooms for families with small children. The private rooms will be offered as first-come-first-served and on an “as needed” basis. The Clubhouse Family Room price includes space for 4 people in 2 bunk beds. $225 single or $600 for family room (sleeps four).

The Boarding House – The V.I.P. lodging for the weekend, the Bunkhouse is an award-winning, immaculately restored bungalow located a short distance from the Clubhouse. We have three private rooms for rent, each with two twin beds, rented by the room. Two of the bedrooms have private baths. Two of the bedrooms share a large bathroom (both rooms have sinks). Bedrooms with a private bath are first-come-first-serve. $600 – per room/per couple.

In-kind donors and local food producers we will be enjoying during our weekend on Sapelo Island include: Sapelo Sea Farm oysters, Sweet Grass Dairy cheese, Sweetwater Brewing Company beer, and Cafe Campesino coffee.
