Sir William Wilde, Dublin’s most eminent eye and ear doctor, was also a tireless antiquarian and archaeologist. His house in Merrion Square in Dublin was the center of the city’s intellectual life. He was also the subject of gossip and the cause of a court case and a scandal that strangely prefigures the case which caused the downfall of his son Oscar.
