On October 1, join the Georgia Conservancy and the Yellow River Water Trail for a peaceful 7-mile flat-water day paddle on the Yellow River as it rambles through Newton County. You will float through quiet wooded areas with sandbars for picnicking and rope swings for playing along the way. We may be joined by some of the locals–watch for blue herons, kingfishers turtles, deer and otters. This lazy section of river is shallow, sandy-bottomed and slow—great for kids, newbies, and anyone who wants to kick back. Drift back in time when you see aged bridge remnants, destroyed by Sherman during the Civil War.
Music will signal the end of your paddle. As you approach the Porterdale’s Yellow River Park just above the mill dam, take in some tunes by local bands. Yellow River Jam is a 1-day music festival on a riverside stage. When you shed your boat gear, head for some craft beer and local fare; the take-out is about a half-block away from downtown Porterdale- a vibrant, historic 1830s mill village. Restaurants will be grilling and baking for hungry paddlers. This will be the best place in Atlanta for Boats, Bands and Brews on October 1st!
If you like this, explore the rest of Yellow River. The Yellow River Water Trail is a Georgia River Network certified river running 53 miles through Gwinnett, DeKalb, Rockdale and Newton counties, beautiful woodlands, stone outcrops, parks, small town shopping and even great whitewater (in Gwinnett and below the dam in Newton) for the daring. The Yellow joins with the Alcovy and South rivers at Jackson Lake to create the great Ocmulgee River.
