The New Georgia award supports Allison with residencies at AIR Serenbe and Newnan Art Rez and a $10,000 prize. Funding for this inaugural award, one of the largest in the American South, comes from the School of the Arts at the University of West Georgia, the Blackwell Trust, and the Warren and Ava Sewell Foundation.
The Frances Focus Fellowship supports a storyteller with deep ties to the American South. Ray receives a month-long residency, stipend, and public programming at AIR Serenbe. This award residency is nominated through at partnership with The Moth.
Allison Joseph is known for her work advocating for young authors, as well as authoring seven collections of poetry. She teaches at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and is Director of the Young Writers Workshop at SIUC, which she founded in 1999. Her books include Multitudes, Double Identity, and Mercurial.
Ray Christian is the seven-time Moth Story Slam Champion and the winner of the 2016 National Storytelling Festival Story Slam. Ray is a retired paratrooper and lives in Boone, NC with his wife, children, dogs, and chickens. He produces the podcast What’s Ray Saying which features stories born out of his own life experiences: inner city poverty, race relations, military, family, travel, and adventure.
