When society breaks down due to war or disaster, women and girls are often the first to feel it. This forum focuses on gender-based violence in regions undergoing conflict or other types of emergencies via two panels.
“When #MeToo Meets War” explores how violence against women is enhanced by combat, famine, drought, ethnic hostility and other emergencies. Humanitarian and other experts will discuss transgressions ranging from rape to intimate partner violence and child marriage.
A second panel, “Hidden Emergency: Sex Trafficking From Conflict Zones to Atlanta,” centers on women and girls who are forced into the sex trade from humanitarian settings. With Atlanta being a major hub for sex trafficking, the issue takes on particular local urgency.
