Free Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony Concert

The Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony (AYWS), the premier honor wind ensemble for high school youth in the Atlanta metropolitan area, will perform a free concert in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at 8:00 p.m.

Under the direction of conductor and music director Scott Stewart, the AYWS will perform ¡Danzas! — a unique concert experience fusing Latin dance forms with original wind band/ensemble literature and classic film music of John Williams.

For this dynamic and captivating program, the AYWS will be joined by saxophonist Steven Temme, percussionist Michael Metzger, and bassist Eric Sabo – members of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band – to perform Escapades by John Williams, the iconic theme from the 1992 film Catch Me If You Can. The concert will also include Roberto Sierra’s “Tumbao” from Sinfonia No. 3, Arturo Marquez’s Conga del Fuego Nuevo, and Michael Gandolfi’s Vientos y Tangos, among other selections. Additionally, alumni of the AYWS will join the ensemble for the annual tradition of performing Howard Hanson’s Chorale and Alleluia.

This concert is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required. For more information, visit ayws.org.

Prior to the performance, the AYWS will host a pre-concert reception at 5Church in Midtown at 6:30 p.m. The event, which will include drinks and hors ‘d’oeuvres, will support the ensemble’s upcoming performance at the New World Center in Miami Beach, Fla. Tickets are $28 in advance and $33 at the door, and may be purchased online at ayws.org.
