The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and Art Papers magazine, in collaboration with Atlanta Celebrates Photography, present Art Papers Live: artist Mickalene Thomas in conversation with Beverly Guy Sheftall, Ph.D., founding director of the Spelman Women’s Research and Resource Center. The conversation launches the Museum’s new exhibition Mickalene Thomas: Mentors, Muses, and Celebrities, featuring acclaimed painter, photographer and filmmaker Mickalene Thomas. The conversation and opening reception will be held Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition is on view through May 20, 2017.
As a 2015 United States Artists Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz Fellow, Thomas uses her art to introduce complex notions of femininity. By using the copy-and-paste style of her collages and paintings, Thomas investigates how Black women have greatly shaped public and personal understanding of gender, race, beauty and wit. Thomas received a Master in Art from Yale and her bachelor’s degree from Pratt Institute. She has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, L’ecole des Beaux Arts in Monaco and the Santa Monica Museum of Art.
The opening reception and conversation are free and open to the public, however registration is required through www.museum.spelman.edu. The Museum is located in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, Ed. D Academic Center (GPS Address: 440 Westview Drive, Atlanta 30310).
