The American Schindler: Varian Fry and the Flight Portfolio

Elizabeth Peterson, Museum Director and adjunct professor of Art & Culture and Museum Studies at Oglethorpe University, gives a backdrop to the IRC Flight Portfolio which includes the work of such artists as Marc Chagall, Robert Motherwell, and Joan Miro. This portfolio was created for the International Rescue Committee at the behest of Varian Fry, a Harvard-educated journalist whose covert actions during WWII resulted in saving the lives of more than 1,500 of Europe’s cultural leaders.
