The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art will host a conversation with “AFRICA FORECAST” artists Firelei Báez, Mimi Plange and Lina Iris Victor Wednesday, November 30, at 6:30 p.m. Graduate assistant and Doctoral Candidate, Kristen Juárez, will moderate a conversation which will delve into their artistic process and inspiration. The Artists Talk concludes the exhibition season for “AFRICA FORECAST.”
“AFRICA FORECAST” draws bold inspiration from trends in African style and explores how 20 women artists and designers from Africa and of African descent shape, imagine and redefine the influence of fashion on everyday life. These artists stretch boundaries of fashion’s influence in art and design.
Mimi Plange was specially invited by Vogue editor Andrea (do you mean Andre Leon Talley?) as a guest lecturer at the Savanah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Plange has worked with the Roche Furniture Company in collaboration with other designers such as Mossni and Jean Paul Gautier. In addition she has dressed First Lady Michelle Obama.
Lina Iris Victor’s piece in the exhibition titled “Constellation I, II and III” is a very popular piece that has spoken to first time visitors and art collectors alike. She has emerged as an example of how artists can take various paths to get an exhibition. Victor puts emphasis on the importance of utilizing social media for advocacy and promotion.
Firelei Báez – Has been named “the” most important artists of the millennial Generation by Hypergenics media (still not sure on this one, can’t find the website/publication). As an emerging artist on the rise, her work speaks to what it means to be an Afro Latina in America.
The event is free and open to the public and will take place in the Spelman Museum located in the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, Ed. D Academic Center (GPS Address: 440 Westview Drive, Atlanta 30310). Visit the Museum site for more information or call (404) 270-5607
