The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art will host a conversation with “AFRICA FORECAST” artists Firelei Báez, Mimi Plange and Lina Iris Victor Wednesday, November 30 at 6:30 p.m. The conversation will delve into Báez, Plange and Victor’s artistic process and inspiration. “AFRICA FORECAST” draws bold inspiration from trends in African style and explores how 20 women artists and designers from Africa and of African descent shape, imagine and redefine the influence of fashion on everyday life. The artists stretch boundaries of fashion’s influence in art and design.
Mimi Plange has worked with the French designer furniture company Roche Bobois and in collaboration with designers such as Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier. In addition, Plange has dressed First Lady Michele Obama.
Lina Iris Victor is a multi-disciplinary artist who adheres to the color palette of blue, black, white and 24-karat gold to create dynamic paintings, living sculptures, photography, performance works and installations. Her popular piece in the “AFRICA FORECAST” exhibition titled, “Constellation I, II and III,” has spoken to first-time visitors and art collectors alike. Victor has put emphasis on the importance of utilizing social media for advocacy and promotion.
Firelei Báez makes large scale, intricate works on paper that are intrinsically indebted to a rigorous studio practice. As an emerging artist on the rise, her work speaks to what it means to be an Afro-Latina in America.
“AFRICA FORECAST” is on view through December 3, 2016.
